This year I decided to expand my horizons and get a trail bike instead of just having my downhill racing rig and my commuter. Mostly I wasn’t financially ready to have a trail and downhill bike at the same time, and with growing economic luck I decided to get a Banshee Spitfire.

(On a side note the Banshee Spitfire is one of the most bada**, trail blazing, ease of climbing, bat out of hell descending, best bike that I have ever ridden…)

In my build kit I really wanted a good fork that would stand the test of time and the test of gnarly pacific north west trails. I decided to go with the new 2016 Fox Float 36. According to my bikes specification I needed to drop the fork to 140mm from 170mm, Wes at the shop helped me out since they are 2016 Fox service certified.

Once on the trail I was really worried at first that the fork would soak up too much on the climb, and would cause me to slow down because there is no climb switch. Guess what? It didn’t the only thing slowing me down was the burning sensation in my legs! There was no creaking or moaning, there was only stability on the way up.

Cole changing his flat tire!

We got to the top of the Cold Creek Trail system where before us was a descent full of roots, baby head sized shale rocks, shale rock gardens, and some groomed corners ready for riding! The first part of the trail was the rooty, rock garden shale field, which put the compression and rebound of this fork to the test. As I was riding the only thing I could think about was the weird but funny slogan for margarine… “I can’t believe it’s not butter!” This fork felt (and still feels – 6 months later) so smooth its incredible! Making technical sections a breeze! During the ending part of the Cold Creek trail my wheel stayed locked to the ground as you blast threw the banked corners.

I was completely astonished with the revised Fit RC2 damper and new Float Air Spring, not only is the fork stiff and has a new chassis but it is so smooth and supple. It has frictionless travel right out of the box that it was shipped to me in! The air spring also gives the fork more than enough ramp up in its stroke, as I haven’t bottomed it out like my 2015 Fox 40 sometimes does on big hits. I would advise on playing with your compression and rebound adjustments and dial it in to feel perfect for you. I can’t thank Wes & Max at Hi-5 Bikes enough for introducing me to this fork and setting it up for me!

Get out and ride!

Thank you Hi-5 Bikes, Fox Racing Shox, Banshee Bikes, and No Apologies MTB.
